President's Corner
Dear Readers:
As we celebrate OHSLA's 15th
Anniversary this year, libraries of
all shapes and sizes are
experiencing changes brought on by a
diversity of issues such as the
uncertainty of the economy, the way
information is being gathered and
disseminated, and the challenge of
ever changing technologies. This
constant flux leaves many librarians
thinking about how we continue to be
of value to the people we serve.
Marketing, promoting, and assessing
have all become topics in the
forefront of the minds of
librarians. Membership in OHSLA can
help you with these issues.
Looking back over 15 years of being
a member of OHSLA (and actually a
member of O.H.I.O before that), one
thing that has remained constant is
the wonderful networking
opportunities we've enjoyed with
health sciences librarians from all
over Ohio. During semi-annual
meetings, we've also benefited from
innumerable professional development
activities that have kept our
natural inclination for life-long
learning satisfied. Our
collaboration with the NN/LM Greater
Midwest Region has flourished; we've
provided a chance for members to
develop their leadership skills and
we've seen members come and go. Take
a moment now to reread the OHSLA
mission. It looks to me as if we
have done a good job fulfilling the
purpose of the organization. Pat
yourselves on the back for a job
well done!
Now, as OHSLA President, I've looked
through the current membership
directory. I used to know every
single person, I no longer do. We
have seen retirements, job
eliminations, relocations, and now I
see new names!
Would it help you do your job better
if you knew more librarians from
around the state? Let's do an
environmental scan. Do you know a
librarian who is new and perhaps not
a member of OHSLA? Invite them to
join, let's make sure we are
reaching out to all the health
science librarians in the state.
I'm looking forward to seeing many
of you at the OHSLA meetings this
year.
Most sincerely,
Bette
